Microsoft Warns of New Excel Vulnerability

Although Excel is the focus of the new critical vulnerability, according to Microsoft, other Office applications are potentially at risk. Microsoft stressed in a security advisory that attackers have no way of forcing users to visit a malicious Web site or open a malicious file, but the company did not indicate whether it would release an Excel patch prior to the February 13 round of updates.

Microsoft is investigating another zero-day vulnerability in its Office suite of productivity applications after confirming that a critical, unpatched flaw exists in Excel.
The flaw is called a "zero-day vulnerability" because there is no patch to fix it, which means that hackers can actively exploit it. While Microsoft's next scheduled round of Windows updates is next Tuesday, there is no word yet on whether a patch will be released at that time to fix the flaw.

Redmond is investigating a limited number of attacks designed to exploit the vulnerability in several versions of Office, including 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004 for the Mac.

Excel Threat

In order for this attack to be carried out, according to a security advisory released by Microsoft, a user must first open a malicious Office file, which would typically arrive as an e-mailed attachment -- a common strategy among malware writers. If the attached file is opened, it would give the attacker the same user rights as the victim has.

The vulnerability also can be exploited through a Web-based attack. In this case, the attacker would host a Web site that contains an Office file designed to corrupt system memory and allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted computer.

Although Excel is the focus of the vulnerability, other Office applications are potentially at risk, according to Redmond. And while Microsoft stressed in the advisory that attackers have no way of forcing users to visit a malicious Web site or open a malicious file, the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the possibility of issuing an Excel patch prior to the February 13 round of updates.

Some users are still waiting for patches for four other critical flaws in Microsoft Word, leaving that software open to attack on at least two fronts. Microsoft has noted that it is working on security updates for Office to address this string of vulnerabilities.

Vista Powered

Office users running productivity applications on Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista, could find extra protection because even users logged in as administrators still operate in limited-access mode. Indeed, for all the complaints about Vista's security alerts getting in the way of a smooth computing experience, analysts say the new operating system's enhanced security offers an improvement over Windows XP.

Directions on Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry compared negative user reaction toward Vista's hardened security to air travelers who complain about having to jump through security hoops at airports. When there is a terrorist threat, he said, people stop complaining about waiting in long lines. But when conditions calm, he added, they bark about having to take off their shoes and put them through the scanner.

"Everybody will complain about those user dialogs in Vista until there is an incident," Cherry said. "Then they will think it's wonderful. Security comes at a price."

VeriSign Plans $100M Internet Upgrade

VeriSign said the $100 million expansion, among other improvements, will increase its ability to process domain name system, or DNS, queries from 400 billion a day to more than 4 trillion a day. Those queries occur every time Internet users click on ".com" or ".net" Web sites or check e-mail and use applications that utilize those domain names.

VeriSign Inc., which manages the ".com" and ".net" domain names registry and ensures Internet users can reach those locations, said it will spend more than $100 million in a massive infrastructure upgrade to combat a new wave of computer attacks and manage a surge in online activity.

Industry experts said VeriSign's investment comes at a critical time for the computing world. They pointed to hackers' powerful attacks this week on the computers that manage global Internet traffic as evidence of the mounting threat from online criminals.

Stratton Sclavos, VeriSign's chief executive officer, was scheduled to announce the upgrade Thursday in San Francisco at a security conference sponsored by RSA Inc., the security division of EMC Corp.

Sclavos said it's the company's largest investment in infrastructure upgrades and technology development. The overall investment is slated to boost capacity tenfold by 2010.

Sclavos said VeriSign, which operates two of the 13 so-called "root" servers that manage global Internet traffic, has an obligation to stay ahead of increasingly insidious and widespread Internet attacks.

"We're seeing a lot more sophistication in these attacks," he said. "And they're not just targeting thousands of users -- they're targeting hundreds of thousands or millions of users."

The Mountain View-based company said the expansion will increase its ability to process domain name system, or DNS, queries from 400 billion a day to more than 4 trillion a day. Those queries occur every time Internet users click on ".com" or ".net" Web sites or check e-mail and use applications that utilize those domain names.

VeriSign said it currently processes 24 billion such interactions daily, and it is preparing for dramatically higher activity as more users get online worldwide and conduct more of their business and leisure on the Web.

The investment also will boost bandwidth on VeriSign's systems from more than 20 gigabits per second to more than 200 gigabits per second.

The company promises reduced bottlenecks and ramped-up speed from infrastructure that is more broadly distributed around the world.

But Sclavos said security is also a key element of the upgrade, including the strengthening of security provisions and engineering improvements to bolster the ability to identify and track security threats around the globe.

"This is good for the whole Internet infrastructure," Sclavos said. "If the Internet's infrastructure fails, hundreds of billions of dollars in commerce and communications will be at risk. We can't afford for that to happen."

Will Stofega, a research manager with market researcher IDC, said the attacks this week that overwhelmed at least three of the 13 root servers highlight the growing threat posed by online criminals.

He said the last major round of large upgrades occurred during the dot-com boom and that VeriSign's investment could prod other companies into following suit.

"This is a very timely investment," Stofega said. "In a couple of years, we're going to start seeing some very, very serious types of attacks. If we don't start making these types of investments now, we're in trouble."

Linux 2.6.20 Kernel Goes Virtual

While many Americans were focused on the sports spectacle known as the Super Bowl yesterday, Linus Torvalds was focused on releasing a new Linux kernel.

Version 2.6.20 of the kernel includes a bevy of fixes and features, notably the introduction of KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) virtualization to the mainline kernel.

KVM virtualization in Linux 2.6.20 could potentially challenge open source virtualization specialist Xen, which has been aiming for Linux kernel inclusion for nearly two years. KVM was created and is maintained by technology start-up Qumranet.

However, the leader of the open source Xen project, Ian Pratt, said he doesn't see any competitive issues with KVM in the 2.6.20 kernel.

"Xen is a true hypervisor, whereas KVM is a legacy virtualization solution akin to VMware Workstation, VMserver and Microsoft Virtual PC," Pratt told internetnews.com. "It lacks the benefits of para-virtualization performance enhancements that have been pioneered by Xen and are now being copied by VMware and Microsoft."

Pratt also explained that Xen is no longer actively seeking inclusion in the mainline Linux kernel either.

"The Xen hypervisor is an operating system independent hypervisor that supports many different operating systems (Windows, Solaris, Netware, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD) of which Linux is just one (though an important one), Pratt said. "Putting Xen into Linux doesn't make sense: hypervisors are different beasts from operating systems, so they share little code."

Plus, he added, "a large part of the Xen project is all the user space tools and libraries that would be totally out of place in the Linux kernel sources."

Enterprise Linux vendor Red Hat (Quote) isn't about to jump on KVM bandwagon for its upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 release. Joel Berman, Product Management Director for RHEL told internetnews.com that Red Hat will not backport KVM to RHEL5.

"RHEL 5 will include integrated virtualization based on the Xen technology and Red Hat will be supporting that for at least seven years," Berman said.

Though not part of RHEL 5, KVM will find a home in the released version of Fedora 7 which is expected in April though early adopter can already get KVM in Fedora as a kernel update.
"Fedora moves at a brisk pace and has already offered updates to kernels with KVM," Berman said.

"This is a great example of why Open Source is a superior development model," Berman said. "Xen, KVM, lguest, OpenVZ and UML are very different technologies that are all improving at a rapid rate and have some overlap in capabilities. The open process allows all of these technologies to be examined and melded and eventually become part of the Linux ecosystem. "
The 2.6.20 is the first Linux kernel release of 2007. The prior update, version 2.6.19, was released at the end of November 2006.

In sticking with the football theme Torvalds used with the kernel release announcement, the Linux founder poked fun at Super Bowl Sunday.

"Before downloading the actual new kernel, most avid kernel hackers have been involved in a 2-hour pre-kernel-compilation count-down, with some even spending the preceding week doing typing exercises and reciting PI to a thousand decimal places," Torvalds wrote in the release announcement.

Symantec and McAfee, in their quests to compete for dollars in the market for security technology, are both using the assets they gleaned from acquisitions in key product releases at the RSA Conference 2007 in San Francisco today.

Symantec, whose CEO John Thompson will give a keynote speech at the show tomorrow, has issued new network access control products that dictate who has access to what data on a corporate network.

The company has upgraded its Symantec Network Access Control (SNAC) 5.1 software to include agentless NAC enforcement, Mac OS X agent support and an integrated 802.1X supplicant.

The software runs on the Symantec's Enforcer appliance, which the company purchased when it bought Sygate in 2005, a machine that helps ensure business networks, branch offices and mobile employees comply with security policy when accessing networks from desktops, laptops or handheld computers.

Rich Langston, senior product manager at Symantec, said offering Mac support will give customers more choices with which to protect their corporate assets.
SNAC will be available Feb. 7, 2007, directly and through the network of Symantec's channel partners, and worldwide in mid-to-late March 2007.
Symantec, which recently bid to buy Altiris to boost its IT management holdings, expects to compete with Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks and several other vendors in the NAC space.

Microsoft is also expected to come out strong with its NAC vision, which it calls Network Access Protection (NAP), when the Windows Server appears later in 2007.

McAfee meanwhile is no less focused on preventing data from getting into the wrong hands.
The software maker today took the assets from its acquisition of Onigma last year and delivered the McAfee Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Host.

DLP Host, as the name suggests, is host-based, so the agent sits like a security guard on desktops or laptops to stop the leak of confidential data, which happens both through malicious and unintentional mishaps.

Vimal Solanki, senior director of product marketing at McAfee, said the DLP Host prevents data from leaving computers through e-mail, instant messaging, printed documents, USB drives and CD-ROMs.

"We are all data leakers," Solanki said. "When we transmit data, we put it at risk, or when we print something and forget to pick it up, or copy something onto a USB drive and lose it in an airline seat pocket."

Careless copying or transmission of data aren't the only ways data gets compromised; sometimes disgruntled employees or perpetrators are the culprits, copying data to USBs and e-mailing them from a Web e-mail account to competitors.

Protection against such instances, he argued, is something that today's security gateways can't reliably provide from their positions at the edge of a network.

DLP Host doesn't just protect assets in the workplace; the software works for remote users at home or on the road by enforcing data protection policies even when laptops are disconnected from the corporate network.

Moreover, Solanki said the DLP Host also provides granular policies, authorizing whether someone is permitted to exchange data via e-mail, USB devices or Web mail.
Solanki said such features make McAfee like its chances of cracking into the data leakage market versus vendors WebSense, which recently bought PortAuthority for data leakage technology, Tablus and Vontu.

"It's a crowded market, but we believe our solution and our presence and brand is going to be very well received," he said.

Regardless of who is offering what, evidence suggests that the data leakage market will be big; the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse claims more than 100 million data records of U.S. residents have been exposed due to security breaches since February 2005.

These data losses have wreaked havoc of some corporate entities, causing lost revenues, damage to brand reputation and reduced consumer confidence.

The fact that Microsoft is offering several flavors of Windows Vista should not be the primary concern when purchasing a new computer or upgrading an operating system, at least according to one analyst who suggests thinking about the kind of hardware you need first, and only then deciding what operating system you need or want to run on it.

Vista continued to eclipse technology news headlines on Thursday as everybody from industry analysts to tech bloggers to home users chime in on the arrival of Microsoft 's latest operating system.
It seems few of Vista's hundreds of features are left to review. News reports are focusing on almost every aspect of the operating system. Although Vista is getting high praise on many fronts, some reviewers are pointing out issues such as game glitches, problematic voice-command features, and DVD restrictions.

As Bill Gates continues his marketing blitz -- the chairman of Microsoft even appeared on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and unveiled a virtual version of his collection of Leonardo da Vinci's scientific musings at the British Library on Tuesday -- some analysts are concerned that consumers might be focusing too much on the wrong part of the computing experience.

Why Compute?

"You buy a computer fundamentally to do some sort of job," said Michael Cherry, a senior analyst with Directions on Microsoft. "It's not to play solitaire. Rather than focusing on the operating system, people should be buying the best computer for what it is they need to accomplish,"

Cherry said the fact that Microsoft is offering several flavors of its Vista operating system should not be the primary concern when purchasing a new computer or upgrading an operating system.

Consumers who are looking for a computer to edit their photo collection, he explained, should be more concerned with choosing hardware that has enough storage space and memory to complete the job than with the operating system.

They also should be concerned about whether the photo-editing software is compatible with Vista, he said, noting that the same equation holds true for any other consumer or business use.

Pick Your Flavor

"We are talking about the low-level plumbing instead of the sinks," Cherry argued. "You should look for the best computer to do your job. If it has Vista on it, then that's wonderful. If it has Mac OS X on it but it's still the best computer you can buy to do your job, then buy it."

Once you determine your hardware needs, you can choose one of several editions of Windows Vista for the best software experience you need or want. Vista is available as a stand-alone box of upgrade discs, and bundled as the OS powering countless new PCs.

Upgrading from Windows XP or Windows 2000 will set you back $99 for the Home Basic version, $159 for the Home Premium, or $259 for the Ultimate version.

Blu-ray and HD DVD Encryption Cracked

The public availability of the encryption keys for Blu-ray and HD DVD movies comes about a month after notorious hacker Muslix64 first cracked the encryption system used by the next-gen DVDs, leading industry experts to believe the Blu-ray and HD DVD cracks will continue.

Hackers now have the keys to the high-def DVD kingdom, leading to serious concerns about the security of DVD player software and the content it is designed to protect on new Blu-ray and HD DVD media.
According to the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) Licensing Authority -- the alliance of motion picture studios and technology companies responsible for the encryption system used to protect Blu-ray and HD DVD content -- hackers have illegally obtained "title keys," also called encryption keys, and used them to decrypt high-definition DVDs.

Hackers have posted the stolen keys on sites such as hdkeys.com for copying and downloading -- allowing anyone to have unauthorized access to the contents of a disc. Whenever a key is made public, it essentially gives people an all-access pass to a decryption free-for-all.

Weakest Link

Security experts say one problem is that HD DVD and Blu-ray discs can be played on a PC, which is too insecure a platform to keep AACS safe.

"The title keys that are used to decrypt the movies will reside somewhere in the PC's memory -- it's just a matter of finding them," explained Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, author of Internet blog PC Doctor. "Sure, programmers can try to be sneaky, but this will only slow down a determined hacker. It's not going to stop them."

The publication of the title keys comes about a month after notorious hacker Muslix64 first cracked the encryption system used by the next-gen DVDs, leading industry experts to believe the cracks will continue. Ed Felten, professor of computer science at Princeton University, said he believes we're in a situation that's not going away.

"What the music industry found was that everything they tried to do to prevent infringing, didn't work," he said. And while movie files are larger than music files -- making them more laborious to copy and download -- what's troubling is the rate at which the attacks occur, he noted.

Biding Time

Kingsley-Hughes said there isn't much the studios can do. Developers involved in creating software players for HD DVD and Blu-ray will no doubt be paying more attention to keeping title keys more secure, but all this does is buy them time. "Studios can change the title keys, but that doesn't help," he said. "One compromised disc is all it takes -- and that movie can be available on [file-sharing networks] in a matter of hours."

Felton said he believes the AACS is not entirely helpless, noting that the organization has developed new ways for the software to hide the encryption keys. But he compared the relationship between the hackers and the AACS to a kind of "arms race." "It's an unfavorable arms race," he said. "In the end we'll continue to see the publication of keys, and people will be able to decrypt these disks."

The AACS Licensing Authority includes such industry heavyweights as Sony , Toshiba, IBM, Warner Bros., and Panasonic.

Google Turbocharges Mini Search Appliance

Google's push to bring the Mini search appliance to small and midsize businesses is not a new strategy. First introduced in 2005, the Google Mini underwent some changes in March 2006 in an attempt to make the appliance more attractive to smaller companies. At that time, Google noted that SMBs do not need the same type of high-powered search functions used by larger enterprises.

Google has updated its Mini search appliance in a fresh bid to win new small and midsize business customers to the all-in-one corporate search product.

The Google Mini is designed to connect to an enterprise network and provide secure search capabilities for employees hunting for documents, applications, and other corporate data. The Mini also can be interfaced with a public Web site so external visitors can find information more quickly in a collection of company-owned content.

New features in the Mini include letting site administrators link search results with a Google-created analytics application, created to provide more detailed information about how people use search on a Web site.

Another improvement comes in the form of the appliance's OneBox feature, which attempts to identify the intent of searches to create a digest of related data. Security also has been upgraded for the Mini, which for the first time will recognize established access settings for users and documents.

Small Business Search

At that time, Google noted that SMBs tend to have tighter budgets and do not need the same type of high-powered search functions used by larger enterprises. With the introduction of several versions of the Mini, the battle for search became a heated one indeed. The SMB market is an attracive one in particular, noted Yankee Group analyst Jennifer Simpson, where appliances are increasingly valued for their ease of use and quick installation times.

Company Minded

In December, IBM and Yahoo launched a free, entry-level search application called IBM OmniFind Yahoo Edition, which can index up to 500,000 documents. One advantage that Google might have over competing offerings such as this is that the Mini appliance has been available in several versions for over a year, and the company has continued to improve it.

Also setting Google apart might be its name recognition, Simpson noted. Although there are several contenders in the enterprise-search space, the dominance of Google in consumer-based searches could have an impact on how it is perceived as an option for corporate search.

"Google's definitely in the top spot when it comes to user searches," said Simpson. "They're pretty much the one to beat, because they're so popular across the board."

The new Google Mini appliance is available starting at $1,995, in configurations that allow users to search between 50,000 and 300,000 documents.
